UmmItOS 1.0.0, the first stable release.

Since rc2, the shell has added:

• a screenshot gallery that searches the text inside your pictures
• a battery screen showing what used the battery
• a health check
• an intruder alarm on the lock screen
• a Sword Art Online menu
• Wi-Fi and Bluetooth dialogs in the middle of the screen
• an Anti-forensics page that shreds what the desktop remembers

A full security audit found no confirmed vulnerability.

New

Screenshots

• Gallery: Super+F shows every screenshot as a grid that flies in. Enter or a click copies one again. The folder is set in Settings → Screenshots.
• Search: typing searches the words inside your screenshots. tesseract reads them, in English and Traditional Chinese, into a local database. You can switch this off.
• Scrolling: smooth wheel glide, elastic ends, soft edges and a scroll indicator.

Lock screen

• Intruder alarm: on the second wrong password, the screen turns to a red, flashing "Unauthorised access" warning. A voice alarm loops until you unlock.
• Camera: shows live on the lock screen, styled like a security camera.
• Clip: records 30 s, kept only on this machine in a folder only you can read.
• Preview: qs -c ummitos ipc call lock alarm shows the alarm; Esc closes it.

Battery

• Logging: the battery is sampled once a minute into a local SQLite database.
• Battery screen: Super+B, or click the battery in the bar, shows:
  • how much you used, and the time left
  • a usage curve
  • the apps that used it most
  • what else drew power: screen brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the power profile
• Drain warning: once per unplug, a notice names an app that is draining the battery fast.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

• Wi-Fi password: asked in a large dialog in the middle of the screen, as GNOME does. A Wi-Fi scan can no longer cut typing short. A wrong password turns the dialog red and shakes it.
• Bluetooth pairing: asks yes or no in the same dialog, showing the 6-digit code. Before this, nothing answered pairing questions.
• Signal: each network in the Wi-Fi menu shows its real signal in dBm.
• Right-click menu: right-click the Wi-Fi icon for a menu.
• Settings → Wi-Fi: your saved networks, with signal, how often you joined each, and how long you've been connected.

Bar

• Network label: a faint label shows the network you're on, a VPN mark, and any connected Bluetooth device. Hovering lists every interface with its type: Wi-Fi, LAN, VPN, Docker.
• Workspace hover: a workspace dot lists its windows' titles, each with its app's icon.
• Discs: a music disc and a microphone disc sit beside the clock, with live levels. Tap the mic to mute it.
• File changes: a history of changed files behind a bar button.
• Tools toggle: the tool cluster folds behind a » toggle, and every icon button has a hover label.

Settings

• Placement: Settings is a full-height panel docked on the left, clear of the notifications and the weather card.
• Order: pages are sorted A to Z in your language, with About last.
• Anti-forensics: lists everything the desktop remembers, with its files and sizes, and overwrites then deletes the ticked kinds. The kinds are screenshot text, battery history, intruder clips, clipboard, file changes, app launch counts, the weather place, Wi-Fi history and temporary pictures.
• Misc: a new page holding the Activate Linux switch.

Other

• Health check: Super+H checks, line by line, that this machine runs what the repo holds: scripts, shortcuts, packages, tools, the input method, dotfiles, autostart and services.
• SAO menu: Super+M, or drag down from the left edge, opens a Sword Art Online menu with its own sounds.
• Sounds: each one is a link in ~/.config/ummitos/sounds, which you can replace or silence.
• Input method: an UmmItOS theme for fcitx5. The on-screen card shows a switch the moment the key is pressed.
• Weather card: moves out of the way of toasts, the notification panel and bar menus, but only when nothing covers it.
• Activate Linux: a joke "Activate Linux" reminder in the corner, which you can switch off.
• fastfetch: shows the UmmItOS mark and sections.
• Discord: an UmmItOS theme for Vesktop.
• Update script: has a colourful terminal menu, and the installers use the same one.

Security

• Audit: the whole codebase went through a full security audit. It found no confirmed vulnerability. Two leads need hardware or a deployment fact to confirm:
  • the Bluetooth dialog's device name
  • a /tmp fallback in the temp wipe, which systemd's default symlink protection blocks
• Clipboard: copies marked sensitive by password managers never reach the clipboard history.
• Wi-Fi history: can now be shredded, and the shell forgets its copy first, so it can't write the history back.

Fixes

• Notifications:
  • Toasts slide aside while the notification panel is open, instead of hiding under it.
  • A picture that loads late no longer overlaps the card below.
• Lock screen:
  • The intruder camera turns off after 30 s and on unlock.
  • The camera isn't held open while idle.
• Screenshots: region shots keep bar menus and app menus in the picture.
• Clipboard: wiping the history also clears what's on the clipboard now.
• Reduce motion: the shell follows the desktop's setting.
• Readability: secondary text is brighter, about 7:1 over the panel.

Install notes

• New packages:

  • qt6-multimedia and qt6-multimedia-ffmpeg, for the camera
  • tesseract, tesseract-data-eng and tesseract-data-chi_tra, for screenshot search
  • sqlite
  • iw, for Wi-Fi signal
  • inotify-tools
  • curl
  • xdg-utils

  Settings → Packages installs whichever are missing.

• A new submodule, configs/quickshell/resources, holds the brand images. Run git submodule update --init.

• New shortcuts:

  • Super+F, screenshot gallery
  • Super+B, battery
  • Super+H, health check
  • Super+M, SAO menu

  If your ~/.config/hypr is a copy, the health check lists any of these that are missing.

• The repo's notes now live in DOCS/: CHECKLIST.md, CONTRIBUTING.md and FULL_REVIEW_WORK.md.

The second release candidate. The shell now speaks Cantonese and Taiwanese Mandarin, Settings can update the system and install missing packages, and the code went through a full review and security audit.

New

Languages

• A Language page in Settings offers English, 廣東話 (written Cantonese) and 國語 (Taiwanese Mandarin).
• Everything the shell shows is translated, from the bar and notifications to the lock screen, cheat sheet, QR scanner, weather and dates.
• noto-fonts-cjk is installed for Traditional Chinese.

Settings

• The Update page shows pending updates, runs a full upgrade, and pulls the latest UmmItOS from its folder.
• The Packages page lists the packages the installer would add that are missing, and installs them in one click.
• Switching pages is animated.

Wallpaper

• You can choose the folder the random wallpaper comes from. Right-click the wallpaper button, or use "Shuffle from here" in the picker.

Notifications

• When a window on a workspace you can't see asks for attention, you get a notice with a Go there button. This covers every link that opens your browser on another workspace.
• If a shortcut's program is missing, a notice names it and offers to open Packages.

Screenshots

• Print takes the full screen at once, with no overlay.
• Notices stay on screen until the picture is taken, so they appear in it.

Other

• Kitty opens a new tab in the current tab's folder.
• The monitor defaults to its highest refresh rate.
• After update.sh finishes, you can go back to the shell.

Security

• A Wi-Fi network name, Bluetooth device name, web page title, track name or notification could carry <img src=http://…> and make the shell fetch it, which revealed your IP address. Text from outside sources is now always shown as plain text.
• Notification bodies keep only bold, italic, underline, line breaks, and links that show their real address.
• Notifications can no longer freeze or flood the shell:
  • An app icon pointing at a FIFO used to hang it. Icons are now theme names or files under /usr/share.
  • Bodies are cut to 4000 characters. An 8.5 MB body used to freeze the shell for about 20 seconds.
  • At most 6 toasts stay on screen, and the rest go to history.
• The login screen keeps its cache in /var/cache/ummitos-greeter, owned by the greeter user, instead of /tmp. Another account on the machine could have created the /tmp folder first and planted code that reads passwords.
• Smaller fixes:
  • A screen capture permission for ~/scripts is gone.
  • A window title can't pass options to notify-send.
  • A QR mailto: link can't attach a local file, and tel: and geo: links must look like a real phone number or map point.
  • wallpaper set over IPC only accepts your own wallpapers.
  • post-install.sh rejects paths that would break env.lua.

Fixes

• Notifications:
  • One click closes a notice once, which ends the Cannot close destroyed notification errors.
  • Clicking outside the panel closes it again after a screenshot.
  • A notice's picture takes clicks too.
• Update page:
  • Pull is disabled during an upgrade, so a reload can't kill paru halfway through.
  • Pull gives up after 60 seconds.
  • The link command it shows works on a default install.
• Wallpaper:
  • The folder highlight follows the right row.
  • The first pick waits for the saved folder.
  • The badge no longer pops in at login.
• The weather follows a language change made during a fetch.
• The lock screen no longer says "charging" on a desktop with no battery.
• Screenshots:
  • They say when a picture fails to save.
  • They no longer report a failure when the save worked but the copy didn't.
• Bar:
  • The power button matches the other buttons' colour.
  • Right-clicking the other bar buttons no longer plays a press.
• The dashboard shows distro and uptime in Chinese again, with no warning when a unit is exactly one.

Install notes

• New packages: pacman-contrib (for checkupdates) and noto-fonts-cjk.
• The wallpaper submodule is updated, so run git submodule update --init.
• If you installed the login screen before, run install/setup-dm.sh again to move its cache out of /tmp.

The first release candidate of UmmItOS 1.0. The desktop now runs on its own shell: one Quickshell (QML) application draws everything you see, in one design, with one motion style.

The shell

UmmItOS used to glue together waybar, swaync, rofi, wlogout, swww, hyprshot and hyprlock. All of them are gone. The shell in configs/quickshell/ now draws:

• Bar: workspaces, clock, tray with its own menus, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, volume (with a limit up to 400%), battery, weather, accent colour
• Notifications: toasts, a history panel grouped by app, copy notices, the volume and brightness OSD
• Launcher and clipboard: apps ranked by use, clipboard history with the full text
• Dashboard: media with an audio ring, calendar, CPU, GPU, memory and disk gauges, workspaces
• Switcher and overview: Alt+Tab, and a GNOME-style overview from the top-left corner
• Lock screen: password through PAM inside the shell, fading in from the desktop
• Login screen: greetd with a greeter that matches the lock screen, replacing GDM
• Settings panel: recording options, your recordings, and an About page

Plus a desktop weather widget, a wallpaper picker, a charging ripple, and an accent picker that remembers the colours you use most.

Under the hood

• Hyprland on Lua: the config is split into one module per concern
• Installer: greetd setup, portable configs, multilib and NetworkManager handling
• Quality pass: the whole shell was audited by eight reviewers and about 130 issues were fixed. Every size, colour and timing now comes from one design file, and every surface animates the same way.

Installing

Fresh install on Arch Linux:

To upgrade an existing install, copy the new configs/ over yours, then log out and back in. If you still have swaync, dunst or mako installed, mask it (systemctl --user mask swaync.service), or it can take the notifications away from the shell.

Known limits

• This is a release candidate. It is tested on one AMD laptop, not yet on a clean fresh install.
• Arch only, AMD only. NVIDIA is not supported.
• The QR scanner cannot show error-correction level, version or mask, because its decoder (zbar) does not report them.

UmmItOS v0.7.1 Release Notes

Installation is now one pass. Install, reboot, log in, and the desktop is ready. Running post-install.sh after the reboot is no longer required.

Improvements

• Shipped configs no longer contain machine-specific values, so nothing has to be patched after the install #9c8dee6
  • hyprland.conf uses monitor=,preferred,auto,1 and picks up whatever display you have
  • hyprlock.conf drops the hardcoded monitor, so the lock screen covers every monitor

Upgrading

Existing installs are unaffected until you copy the configs again. install/copy-config.sh still asks before overwriting anything, so your current monitor, interface and screenshot settings stay as they are. If you do take the new configs, you can drop your old .bak.* files once the desktop comes up correctly.

Finally ... I’ve written the release notes! LOL

As this is the first release, there are a lot of changes to cover. Here’s a comparison of what’s new from version v0.1.0-rc4 to the v0.1.0.

New Features:

• Added MPV as the default video player with video looping enabled by default. The installation script has been updated to include MPV.
• Added CAVA as an audio visualizer with a new gradient mode featuring a purple color scheme. The installation script now includes CAVA.
• Added PulseAudio support. The installation script has also been updated accordingly.
• Added an emoji package with ALT_L + E as the shortcut to launch the program. The installation script now includes this package.

• Resolved an issue where Hyprlock would attempt to lock the system even when it was already locked and Hyprland was running. The system now detects if Hyprland is already launched and will not lock if it is.
